Alexander and his parents moved to New Zealand in 1880. After attending Queens College in Auckland, he was employed on a farm in Taranaki in 1894/95, and in 1896 worked as a draper's assistant for James Smith and Sons, Wellington. Becoming active in various unions, he helped found the New Zealand Federated Shop Assistants Association in 1922, a union that represented shop assistants, drapers, grocers, chemists, butchers, and hairdressers. By 1952 he had become the President of that Union. Ten daughters and three sons were born to Alexander and Emily.
